IPL HAIR REMOVAL
The Lumenis M22 IPL Hair Removal treatment is a safe non-invasive treatment that permanently reduces hair growth, resulting in smooth, beautiful skin. The unique technology of Luemis M22 IPL (Intense Pulse Light) targets the hair follicles and impairs their ability to grow hair. IPL hair removal is effective on black, brown and red hair. Highly controlled pulses of light are applied to the treated area and selectively absorbed by the hair follicles beneath the skin surface. The absorbed light heats the hair follicle, which inhibits the re-growth potential of the follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. Lumenis IPL Hair Removal treatment is generally administered in a series of four to six sessions that yield excellent long-term results. Significant hair reduction may already be visible even after the first session.
Before any IPL Laser treatment it is recommended that you first attend a short consultation where a test patch (2-3 pulses) is performed on a small section of the area you wish to have treated. If you are travelling and are short on time you may be able to have your test patch and treatment on the same day. You must have worn sunscreen on the area being treated 2 weeks prior to your appointment on the area you wish to have treated.
IPL hair removal works best on the hairs that are in their active growth phase. In order to reduce the amount of hair growth, multiple treatment sessions are required to capture more hair follicles in their growth phase. At The Skin Corrective Centre we recommend four to six sessions at 4–6 weekly intervals in order to achieve up to 80% hair reduction.
Although IPL hair removal is able to permanently remove existing hairs, this does not prevent the growth of new hair over time. Therefore, we recommend periodic re-treatment every few years, even after the initial set of sessions. Most people are able to have IPL hair removal.
Unsuitable candidates include those who are currently pregnant breastfeeding or have a current spray tan or sunburn present, patients prone to skin discolouration or keloid scarring, and patients who want grey, white, red, or very fine hairs removed. Patients who have recently taken Roaccutane for acne, need to wait at least six months after finishing their course of treatment to commence IPL hair removal. You must cease any light sensitive medication 2-4 weeks prior to your treatment.
Hair should not be plucked or waxed at least six weeks before treatment. The principle behind this is to leave the follicle of the hair intact. Plucking/waxing will remove the follicle, whereas shaving will not. You will need to shave the area to be treated the day before or the morning of the procedure. Do not tan the area to be treated. Use sunscreen daily on the areas to be treated and avoid solariums, direct sun exposure, and spray tans. Do not apply cosmetics or creams to the treatment area on the day of treatment. If you have a history of cold sores and you are planning to have your upper lip hairs or chin hairs treated you will need to inform your treating physician so that you can be put on appropriate anti-viral therapy beforehand. If you are having IPL hair removal on the face you will need to be using medical grade skincare to ensure your skin does not burn or pigment pre and post treatment.
Generally, there is a small amount of discomfort associated with IPL hair removal. It feels like a rubber band snapping on the skin associated with the feeling of heat. Most patients tolerate it without any issues. Sun avoidance is important after any IPL treatment, and sunscreen should be used on sun exposed treated areas on a daily basis. This is important to reduce pigmentation problems after the treatment (either gain or loss of pigmentation of the treated area). Although uncommon, any blisters or scabs resulting from laser hair removal should not be scratched or picked. This can result in permanent scarring (very rare) if these blisters or scabs become irritated or infected. The skin may appear mildly red and swollen after treatment and soothing gel can be used for any skin irritation from laser treatment.
